Why doesn't my 1099 int comparison from last year's return match what was actually filed last year?

When I look at the drop down menu on  Turbotax 2024 year's income summary, the amount of interest from 1099 Int from last year  ( Turbotax 2023) is listed next to 2024's amount. The amount from 2023 is alarmingly greater than 2024's amount. So when I look to verify the amount from last year by looking at last year's Turbotax return, the amount is much , much lower than I see 2023's interest posted on this year's return.

The 2024 tax return says 2024 interest from 1099 Ints are $ 270 compared to $2759 last year. In reality, when I open up 2023's return, the amount from 2023's 1099 Int was $303.

This discrepancy is also true for each of the last 3 years. For example Turbotax 2023's return shows the comparison with  Turbotax 2022 & the amount doesn't even closely match what was actually filed in 2022. I don't understand why .

Why doesn't my 1099 int comparison from last year's return match what was actually filed last year?

Yeah, it's something strange that TTX does every year....but just on the menu display page

1)  In the 2023 Prior year interest column, they include all of 2023 1099-INT interest PLUS any tax-exempt interest on your 2023 1099-DIV  (box 12)

BUT

2) For the 2024 column, they only include what's on your 1099-INT form.

In order for us to troubleshoot this issue, you can send us a “diagnostic” file for your 2024 return that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions for TurboTax Desktop users:

  1. From the black bar at the top of your screen, select Online
  2. Click Send Tax File to Agent
  3. Click Send on the message that pops up
  4. TurboTax will create a "sanitized" copy of your return information with no personal info
  5. Post the 7-digit token number here in this thread

Here are the instructions for TurboTax Online users:

Go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.

  1. Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
  2. A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
  3. On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
  4. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is. Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.
  5. Reply to this thread with your Token number. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

We will then be able to review your file to see what you are seeing, and we can determine what is going on in your return and provide you with a suggested resolution.

Why doesn't my 1099 int comparison from last year's return match what was actually filed last year?

I followed the instructions for a diagnostic copy of my Turbotax program, but I'm wondering how anyone will know what it is that I'm questioning. It seems  like they won't know if the total amount of interest from 1099s  reported on this year's Turbotax from last year is accurate without seeing last year's Turbotax too.

Your diagnostic data, along with the information that you have previously provided in your post regarding your 2023 tax return will enable us to better troubleshoot what you are experiencing.  Your diagnostic file does not show your personal information and is not shared in any way.  It provides a good tool to help us understand what is going on with your program.

You can send one to us by following the directions below:

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created. Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number (including the dash) that was generated in the response.

*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)

We look forward to hearing from you.
