Why does state refund not update after entering extension amount paid?

After you enter the state extension amount paid on the federal side you need to go though the state return again for it to update.

The only way I was able to get the update to work was to go into the amended portion of the state return and put the additional amount sent.  Before filing an extension, had a known amount to pay at that time and that was on the state extension form filed. That amount was on the first check written before July 15.

However, also, wrote another check to cover any additional required payments to avoid possibly fees and/or penalties.  This is where I was having a difficult time with the state portion of the filing.  If there is another or better way, could you explain and let me know what I missed.
