Does this apply to the ITIN you entered? - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/individual-taxpayer-identification-number
Expired ITINs: If your ITIN wasn't included on a U.S. federal tax return at least once for tax years 2020, 2021, and 2022, your ITIN will expire on December 31, 2023. ITINs with middle digits (the fourth and fifth positions) "70," "71," "72," "73," "74," "75," "76," "77," "78," "79," "80," "81," "82," "83," "84," "85," "86," "87," or "88" have expired. In addition, ITINs with middle digits "90," "91," "92," "94," "95," "96," "97," "98," or "99," IF assigned before 2013, have expired.
Thanks for sharing the article. The ITIN was included in the 2021 and 2022 U.S. federal tax returns as a dependent. Though the middle digits start with "9", it was issued after 2013. So, these expiration rules do not apply to this ITIN.

Yes, will do. Thank you!
The program is still incomplete and will not be fully functional until mid to late January when these kinds of bugs are usually corrected. Try again next month.
"The ITIN was included in the 2021 and 2022 U.S. federal tax returns as a dependent."
I thought the IRS's guidance is that spouses can never be claimed as dependents by the other spouse, even when the being supported spouse is a non-resident alien...
They can't be considered dependents unless the questions were answered in a manner that suggested your wife was a dependent other than a spouse.
I meant to say "as a spouse". Apologies for the confusion. I was able to submit the returns using this ITIN. The application still showed me this warning. However, I could proceed to the next steps and finish without any errors. I believe there's something incomplete in the software.
Some TurboTax clients are receiving an error about ITIN numbers being expired or not valid. We are aware of the issue and are working to resolve it.

So, are you saying you were able to file your 2023 federal tax return online via TT even though TT was still showing your family's ITIN as invalid???
Or, are you saying you followed the advice some TT reps have given here on this issue, being to file a paper return by postal mail to sidestep the faulty TT ITIN error?
"They can't be considered dependents unless the questions were answered in a manner that suggested your wife was a dependent other than a spouse."
How could a wife be a dependent other than a spouse? What other category could apply for a person's wife?
Users who don't know better, will try to enter a spouse as a dependent incorrectly and they choose OTHER for the relationship since none of the other choices fit. In the past, when you could file separately and claim the exemption for the non working spouse there was a check box for that choice in the spouse section of the MY INFO tab but since 2018 that is no longer an option. Maybe in 2026, if they allow the Trump tax law changes to sunset, that option will return.
