Why does my return keep getting an IND-031-04 error despite me entering the correct 2019 AGI, which I've double-checked against the IRS record?

I've checked against my 2019 tax return filed with TurboTax and against the IRS transcript and despite entering the correct AGI several times it keeps giving me the same reject error.

Why does my return keep getting an IND-031-04 error despite me entering the correct 2019 AGI, which I've double-checked against the IRS record?

I had this problem last year when filing my taxes as "Married Filing Jointly", but my wife had passed away in January. Did you file jointly and your spouse passed away before you filed? This year, I received the following message - "IND-031-04 - The primary taxpayer's AGI or Self-select PIN from last year does not match IRS records.". When I pulled my Account Transcript report for 2019 from the IRS site, it stated "No tax return filed", yet further down it showed that I had paid my taxes as of in July. The Return Transcript stated that "as of the date of this letter, we have no record of a processed tax return for the tax period listed above", which was December, 2019. Above that statement, it shows the date of my first attempt to file (with the AGI from the previous year), "we received a request for verification of non-filing of a tax return.". The "Adjusted GRoss Income:" on this Transcript was blank. Therefore I went back into TT and set the AGI as '0' (zero dollars). When I resubmitted, IRS accepted the return and I was able to file my state taxes. Hope this helps you out.

No, I've only filed once for myself. The tax record lists my AGI on the return as what I am inputting and as what my TurboTax form says as well.

cehutchison: Thanks for the zero suggestion. It may have helped, it may have not as I received a text saying my federal return was rejected, but I got an email saying it had been accepted. Go figure. If I don't receive a refund by April 15th, I guess I will mail it my return.

When you received the email and checked the IRS site, were you supplied a number to call for the IRS in the transcript? You may need to call them for an explanation.

I think you will be able to check TT for status before then. It may also be available on the IRS site. You will need to set up an account to check your Transcripts, which is free.

I am having the same issue; double checked and went to IRS site for account transcript, all AGI values match up. Hesitant to enter 0 as that is not the correct value. Thanks in advance!

I was hesitate to enter 0 also, (especially after 3 different other various tries that TurboTax suggested) and it worked. So I would try an AGI of 0.

Why does my return keep getting an IND-031-04 error despite me entering the correct 2019 AGI, which I've double-checked against the IRS record?

Thank you! Someone explained why the 0 would work (IRS has not processed 2019 returns) so I tried it and it worked. Fingers crossed it results in a refund check soon!

Why does my return keep getting an IND-031-04 error despite me entering the correct 2019 AGI, which I've double-checked against the IRS record?

Thank you, my 2019 AGI was correct; I was hesitant to enter 0 since there is no real explanation why this would work, but it went through with that. Is it true that the IRS has not processed many 2019 returns so that's why the correct 2019 AGI would not work?

If they had not processed the return, that is why the 0 worked. Without processing the return, they would not have the correct AGI.

Why does my return keep getting an IND-031-04 error despite me entering the correct 2019 AGI, which I've double-checked against the IRS record?

I too have been rejected with IND-031-04 error in filing my Federal1040SR and the State Tax Return through TurboTax.  I am single and have been so in all my filings for the last 20 yrs, so no confusion there.  I have a copy of my 2019 tax return that I filed on time independently by mail last year, so that I know my AGI that was declared to IRS.  I am retired and have been so for the last 8 years, hence there's no problem there either.  I paid a substantial amount of tax to IRS in 2019 and there was no dispute from IRS.  Therefore, it is rather puzzling to get the error message along with the rejection.

Now, I have requested an secure ID number from IRS as well as a copy of my transcript.  Will the former help in my e-filing via TutboTax.   I did pay my fee to TurboTax for filing my State Returns for 2020 (the Federal was free with the download for the Home Deluxe version).   My questions are the following:

(1) Can I use the IRS ID number (this is a 6-degit number) in place of the ID number required by Turbotax  next to my AGI ?  TurboTax asks one to make up any 5-degit number.

(2) Secondly, if I still get rejected by IRS after entering the AGI from my transcripts and I am forced to file by mail, will TurboTax refund the fee I paid to file my State Taxes ?

Why does my return keep getting an IND-031-04 error despite me entering the correct 2019 AGI, which I've double-checked against the IRS record?

When I was getting a AGI error message, I was also typing in the correct AGI from last year's return. I learned that the IRS is terribly behind in having the correct AGI information. I entered 0 for my AGI number and the return was accepted. May help, may not.

JimNKim:

Thank you for the suggestion.  I suppose I will wait until I get my transcript from IRS before I go the suggested route.  I am not certain if this is a software glitch with TT.  There seem to be a whole lot of people with the issue, and I am not certain if this is also the case with other e-filing methods available out there.
