If you are using the CD/Download version of TurboTax the license code is entered in the License code box on the activation screen. Select continue after you enter the code to complete the installation. This link Activating TurboTax CD/Download software has information that you may find useful. TurboTax Online does not require to enter a license code.
Now, out of the blue, after an auto-update on 03-14-21, my CD version of 2020 TurboTax Premier throws a dialog box asking for the activation code. I have been using this to do my current return over the last week, and have not been prompted for my activation code, until this new update came out today.
So, I get the CD package and the Act. code, which I have in hand, and enter my 14 digit code. The dialog box incorrectly forces hyphens where they should not go. Then, again and again, it rejects my correctly entered code. The same activation code that I installed my licensed software with just last week. Or, so I thought.
What I did not realize is that I picked up the wrong CD package sleeve. I picked up the 2019 TT Premier sleeve. It has a 14 digit activation code. 2020 TurboTax Premier has a 16 digit activation code.
Of course, I figured all this out only after I completely uninstalled 2020 TT Premier.
The real question is this: why in the world is an update, which happen frequently in March and April, asking me for an activation code? WHY does this enter into the picture.
I lost another hour of my life dealing with TT bugs and problems. A minor update SHOULD NOT ask for the activation code. This is the CD version and I bought it from YOU, and activated it. Nothing has changed. Just your minor update where you correct your bugs or add new forms.
Please get this note to the DEV team. I would still like to punch them in the nose over this.
But, the worst problem is still that TurboTax Business has no way to import from TD Ameritrade. Just like last year. Just like the year before. And the year before that. And the year before that.
Yet, this module/feature is right there in TT Premier. Does it not occur to the TT Business Dev Team that businesses and trusts trade stocks with brokerages and need to enter this data?
I had to enter 80 transactions this year.
So, next year, I will NOT buy TT Business. I can but Tax Act for much less since I have to enter every single transaction by hand anyway. I am voting with my feet on TT Business, which hasn't had a major update in a decade. I know I used it every year since 2004.
