Service animal expenses can be deducted under the medical expense section of Schedule A. Follow the directions below to enter your expenses.
- Log in and click take me to my return (unless already in).
- Click the Federal tab from the left-side menu.
- Click the Deductions & Credits tab at the top of the screen.
- On the next page, scroll down to see all tax breaks and click Show More next to Medical.
- Click Start/Revisit next to Medical Expenses.
- You will claim expenses related to your service animal on the input screen where you list expenses related to medical supplies and equipment
Medical supply and equipment expenses include:
- Bandages
- Equipment for medical care
- Diagnostic devices

Guide dogs or other animals aiding the blind, deaf, and disabled
- Oxygen and oxygen equipment
- Pregnancy test kit
- Artificial limbs
- False teeth
- Wheelchair
