When will the IRS start accepting taxes?

The IRS has not yet indicated when they will start accepting 2022 e-filed tax returns.  Usually it is sometime from mid to late January.

Even when the IRS starts accepting 2022 tax returns, you can't file your tax return until you have all of your W-2s, 1099s, and other tax forms. Employers have until January 31 to send W-2 forms. 1099-B forms from investment accounts could be even later.

@byoung609 - and from the postings on these boards, those that rush are often the ones who require to amend.

Further, if you are elgible for EITC or the additional child tax credit (lines 27 and 28 of Form 1040), the IRS is not permitted to begin processing those returns until Mid-February - by law, so rushing doesn't get the return processed quicker in those circumstances.

Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH Act)

The Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH Act) made changes to the tax law:

  • Refund delays: If you claim the EITC or ACTC, we can’t issue your refund before mid-February.
  • Social Security number: You, your spouse and all qualifying children or relatives you claim on your tax return must have a valid Social Security number that was issued before the due date of the year you’re filing for (including extensions). This rule also applies to EITC claims you make when you amend your return or file an original return.
