When will I be able to use my refund to pay for TurboTax

Slow down.   No one can e-file yet.   Tax year 2023 does not end until midnight on December 31.    You cannot e-file until early January.   And....if you do....it will just sit on a server for a few weeks waiting for the IRS to start accepting/rejecting e-files.

When e-filing opens, you may be able to choose to pay your TurboTax fees from your federal refund----IF your refund is enough to cover the fees plus the EXTRA "refund processing fee" that you pay in order to have the third party bank receive your refund from the IRS, take out your fees to pay TT, and send you the rest.

I discourage this choice---we hear from too many upset people whose refunds have gone astray when they use this service and some of them wait for their refunds for months.   It is much better to simply pay your TurboTax fees upfront using a credit or debit card and avoid involvement with the third party bank altogether.

And…..do not try to prepare a tax return without ALL of your income documents; you must include every 2023 W-2 on the same tax return.  Employers have until the end of January to issue W-2’s.   Wait until you have all of your W-2’s.

Yes when you file you can have the fees deducted from your federal refund.  BUT there is an Extra $40 Refund Processing Service charge (45 in California) for that and it might delay your refund.  Or it might get lost in the 3rd party bank that the refund goes through to take the fees out.  So try to pay upfront with a credit card or debit card.

Yes you can file no matter how you pay the fees.
