If you are asking who you can claim or who claims what... if your daughter was the sole income in the home and she provided for you and her support, she would file her taxes as Head of Household.  A child CAN claim a parent when they are the ones that provide the support.  Since she  paid more than half of her own support, she would not be your qualifying child and you would not be able to claim her, however, you could be her Qualifying Relative.

To claim someone as a Qualifying Relative, they must be:

  • Your child ( including step children, adoptive children and foster children) or a descendent of them
  • Your sibling (including half siblings) or a child of your sibling or a sibling-in-law
  • Your parent or grandparents, including step parents and in laws
  • Any other person that lived with you for the entire tax year
  • Not a qualifying child of another taxpayer
  • Someone that you provided over half of their support for during the tax year
  • Has less than $5,050 in income (not counting social security)

To qualify, you have to meet certain criteria. To file as Head of Household, you have to:

  • Pay for more than half of the expenses for a qualifying household
  • Be considered unmarried on the last day of the tax year
  • Have a qualifying child or dependent

If you had no income during the year, you would not need to file your own return.
