Question

Utah Use Tax in Two Counties

Is there a way to calculate Utah Use Tax when I lived in two counties with different use tax rates in 2021? If I remember from last years, TurboTax only asks for my current county, but I need to account for two different counties. If it only allows for one county, would it be appropriate to calculate what I should pay manually, then simply do some math to see how much I would need to enter into TurboTax with the one county’s tax rate to get the right use tax amount? Or would that mess something up?

In TurboTax, you can enter two different rates.  Sales Tax Rate Changed During the Year:  Enter the same location twice, once for each sales tax rate charged. Make sure to enter the dates you paid each rate.

This is in the state tax return section correct, not federal? I thought remembering from last year it only let me choose one county and didn't give an option to say I had a change during the year. If it allows that I may be good. Although, you say to enter the same location twice. Since I lived in two counties with different rates, do  you mean I enter one county with the dates I was there, then choose the rate changed and enter the amounts I spent in the second county?

No, this is in the federal Sales Tax interview.

Open or continue your return

  • Search for sales tax and select the Jump to link in the search results
  • When asked how you want to enter your sales tax info:
    • Choose EasyGuide if you want us to walk you through it
    • Choose Enter All My Receipts if you’ve saved all of your receipts and can give the grand total

Click through those screens and you can remove states or edit dates if needed.  You can have as many lines as you need to calculate your correct deduction.  See 3rd item below:

We need to know where you actually lived (not your state of residency) and your total sales tax rate. The total rate could include both state and local rates.

Moved within the Same State
If you moved within your state and each location has a different local sales tax rate, select the same state for each location. Also, enter the dates you lived in each location and the total state and local sales tax rate for those locations.

Moved to a Different State
If you moved to a different state, enter each state, the dates you resided there, and the total state and local sales tax rates.

Sales Tax Rate Changed During the Year
Enter the same location twice, once for each sales tax rate charged. Make sure to enter the dates you paid each rate.
