Unemployment tax returns

You have not mentioned when you filed your tax return.   Did you file before the tax law changed for federal tax on unemployment?

So far the IRS has issued over 8 million of those “extra” refunds for tax on unemployment.   The IRS has not announced when the next batch will be sent out, but they are still working on them.

The IRS is recalculating refunds for people whose AGI is $150K or below and who filed before the tax law that changed the amount of unemployment that is taxable on a federal return became effective.

The IRS began to send out the additional refund checks for tax withheld from unemployment in May.  The refunds are being sent out in batches—starting with the simplest returns first.   If you are eligible for the extra refund for federal tax that was withheld from your unemployment the IRS will be sending you an additional refund sometime during the next several months.  TurboTax cannot track or predict when it will be sent.  The IRS has not provided a way for you to track it, so all you can do is wait for the refund to arrive.

Unemployment tax returns

Hi Tyesia

I believe you asking about the tax un the $10,200 unemployment compensation.  I know this is frustrating.  Unfortunately, this is one of the items that the IRS has to put a set of eyes on to generate the refund.  AThey are working through them one at a time.

Be sure you check the "Where's My Refund" page at IRS.gov.  If it still says they are processing it, at least you will know that it is in the line.  That is about the only resource available, though.

They are working the number down.   They had over 9 million refund claims in May and they have worked it down to 7 million according to an article that I read yesterday, even with several million new claims coming in each month.  So it is getting better, but not quickly.    Hopefully they will be able to add workers to help them with these and other refund claims.

Sorry there's  not any better news
