Unable to e-file NYS IT-201

Last week I was unable to e-file my NYS tax return IT-201. The TT program states that I have a tax situation in my return that makes it ineligible for e filing. Reason given is that "Returns with a federal return which is ineligible for electronic filing." "The rules are set by the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance" Good news you can print your new york return and file it by mail.

No indication is given as to which form is causing this issue. In all the years I have used TT, I have never, ever run into this issue. The TT program found no errors in my federal tax return.

A review of the NYS Tax website gives no indication of any issues with filing my return online. It is also my understanding that you can only file your NYS tax return online.

When I spoke to customer support last week (today is 1/30/24), I was advised that NYS wasn't accepting returns until 1/29/24

If that advice was correct, then I do not understand why I cannot file my return...today is 1/30/24

Unable to e-file NYS IT-201

Updating my post. According to TT, both the 1040 and NYS tax form IT-201 is ready for efiling: https://form-status.app.intuit.com/tax-forms-availability/formsavailability?albRedirect=true&product...

This page also states that NY form IT-2 is unsupported for e-filing.

What's the fix here? NYS requires that forms be e-filed

Further update. I spoke to the NYS tax dep't and advised them of the issue stated above.

They have no information on their end that supports the error message that the software provided--namely that the state tax return cannot be e-filed because of rules set by the NYS Tax dep't.

In other words, this is a software issue.

So TT. Are you going to fix this issue. I paid for this program because it provides e-filing functionality. If I cannot e-file my state tax return, because of a software issue, then I did not get the benefit of my bargain.

Since New York Form IT-2 form is unsupported for e-filing, you can mail your return.

According to the New York Department of Taxation and Finance's E-file requirement for individual taxpayers page:

You're required to electronically file your return if you meet all three of the following conditions:

  • you use software to prepare your own personal income tax return; and
  • your software supports the electronic filing of your return; and
  • you have broadband Internet access.

Since the software doesn't support the e-filing of this form, you can mail your return.

If you're enclosing a payment (check or money order and Form IT-201-V) with your return, mail it to:

STATE PROCESSING CENTER

PO BOX 15555

ALBANY NY 12212-5555

If you're not enclosing a payment, mail your return to:

STATE PROCESSING CENTER

PO BOX 61000

ALBANY NY 12261-0001

See the New York Department of Taxation and Finance's Enhanced Form IT-2, Summary of W-2 Statements for additional information.

Thank you for your reply. . .the information you posted dovetails with the information that NYSDTF provided on how to file a paper return.

I checked the form IT-2 that TT generated with the enhanced form IT-2 that the NYSDTF provides. There is no difference between these forms.

That being the case, and given that this particular form has been filed electronically in the past by me using TT without issue, then it appears that TT has an obligation to fix this issue so that I can electronically file my NYS tax return.

In other words, if this particular form has been supported in the past by TT, and given that the current form found on the state tax website matches the form that TT generates, then there is no good reason that I can discern as to why I cannot efile my NYS tax return.

I can only trust that this post is being monitored by an intuit employee, and that this issue will be escalated to enable a fix ASAP. I'm confident that I'm not the only paying customer who is running into this road block.

I got the same exact line from Turbo Tax.  I have no errors on federal or state return.  Hopefully the only problem is its too early to file.  Time will tell.  If its too early to file electronically the program should tell you that up front.

"If its too early to file electronically the program should tell you that up front."

Exactly. And to continue. . .I tried to efile my federal return only, and then file my State return later. The TT program initially indicated that I could do so, but then when I tried to initiate the federal E-file, the program said I had to mail it in. . .indicating that it was a matter beyond their control (e.g tax laws, regulatory changes. . .etc)

I was able to maneuver through the phone prompts to reach customer service ( Like Christopher Columbus in search of the new world). Even they were flummoxed. The best that could be explained was that TT was working on it and try to e-file later.

Intuit. I know you monitor these boards. You need to pick up your game and make sure that your turbotax software is ready for prime time. . .with free efile becoming more and accessible, the question becomes . . .why am I continuing to purchase your product?

Unable to e-file NYS IT-201

I don't know why this took me here. I simply tried to e-file my federal return, but it wouldn't let me. Seems to be a future update regarding a Schedule C entry on paying a sub-contractor. At first they said, "Update on 2/21" perhaps (I forget), then "update on 2/28".  Now they say, "Update on 3/7." I figured I'd just file and correct later if need be. BUT, I could not e-file. Yes, this is the first time this has happened with TurboTax (Home & Business), but it is very annoying!  Also, to e-file Colorado I had to pay $20 out of my federal refund. Ok. When I finalized this, however, they added another $40 fee for processing.  What?  No thanks. I'll do it myself!

I'm having this same exact issue. Was this resolved for you?

A full or corrupted cache can cause problems in TurboTax, sometimes you need to clear your cache (that is, remove these temporary files).

Online version:

  1. Log out of your return and try one or more of the following:
    • Don't use Internet Explorer.
    • Clear cache and cookies,
    • Sign in using a different browser.
    • Sign in using a different device.
  2. Log back into your return.

Desktop version:

  1. Save your return while closing the program.
  2. Update the program
  3. Open
