There are two states listed in box 16:

Total in box 1 70995.22

States in Box 16

VA 70995.22

MD 16572.94

So it appears that VA taxed the complete salary. So when I do the file the 502 (part year) for the State of MD reflecting salary when I lived in the other state, should I file the difference between VA and MD or should I submit the 70995.22 as it appears in the W2 for VA even if the total would be more than total in box 1?

Yes, you enter your information, the way it is on your W-2 form.

When you file as a part year resident for Virginia and Maryland, as you are going through the state program for Virginia, it asks how much income was earned in the other state.  This is where you enter the amount that was earned in Maryland and that amount will be deducted from the total amount you earned during the year.

Then Virginia will tax you only on the amount that was earned in Virginia.

Thank you for your response. But should I enter the amount in the W2 or should I enter the difference totaling the total earned?
