Turn off imports

Greetings.  I am using TT Deluxe Desktop, with Windows 10.  Is there a way to have TT never ask me if I want to import data?  I.e., when entering dividends and interest, I have to click on the don't import screen every time I enter an account.  I am entering the data manually.  Thanks.

and now you have to click on the investment type also.  Not aware of any way to turn these questions off.   The only alternative I can think of it to input 1099s via forms mode instead of the new terrible EasyStep workflow, you can double click on the Schedule B and it will spin up a new 1099 entry form.

An option to help stop these prompts is to try to manually update your program to see if that clears the repeated prompts to import.  Select Online in the menu on the top, and then select Check for Updates.

You can also manually update your program.

In previous years I had always turned that import prompt off.  The method to turn off the import prompt is still there this year, but it didn't work for me.   Even though I turned it off, it kept asking me.   Here's how it was normally done when it was working properly.   I haven't tried recently, so go ahead and try if you want, in case something was fixed.

  • In your desktop product, go to Federal Taxes.
  • Subtab: Wages & Income
  • I'll choose what I work on.
  • On the Income Summary screen, the first topic is Import Summary.    View or update.
  • On next screen choose "Add Other Documents".
  • On next screen choose blue button "Manage Import Options."
  • On next screen choose (yes/no) type of documents you do/do not wanted to be prompted for.
  • On next screen choose "I'll type it in myself" and Continue.
  • Then you should be back at the Summary screen.

My confidence level is low that it will succeed, since I think that option was broken when they redesigned the interest/dividend/investment interface this year.

I "Thought" I found it....but I'm somewhat mistaken

1)  Go to the top of the Wages and Income page...and hit the " View" alongside the "History of Imported Documents"

2)  Next page: "Add Other Documents"

3) Next Page: Ignore the bullet points and hit the blue button for "Manage Import Options"

4)  Select "No" for everything you don't ever want to import

5) next page: select "I'll type myself" bullet point the last time, and "Continue"

That brings you back to the menu page...and when you now select to Add a 1099-INT, it brings you to a page that shows everything entered so far, and you can select "Add Investments" at the bottom..

............and then it still asks if you want to import...and have to select "Skip Import"

CRUD

______________

I don't know.....maybe it skipped one screen it used to show??? Maybe not  but certainly asked more than I wanted it to.

NOBODY I've talked to likes the way they display those forms entered this year....who the heck dreams up these changes anyhow?...did the bother to show any team of actual USERS of the software?

Thanks all for your responses.  These are very good suggestions.  In effort to finish my taxes I ended up just using the forms view.   Chances are I will need these again next year.

same - forms for INT, DIV and OID worked very well actually I had not used it much for this sort of input before but it has all the adjustment fields on one screen which avoids all the tedious interview steps, and the carryover from 2023 created most of the forms to easily resuse.  OID I see is still old EasyStep format tho.  1099-B seemed more fiddly so I went back to EasyStep unfortunately with lots of scrolling and questions.

I tried the option to turn off the import question which I didn't know about.  But it didn't work.  But they've screwed up the rest of the workflow so badly, to me the import question is now a relatively minor inconvenience.

This is a terrible new format.  Up to now it has been compact and easy.  The asking to import can't be turned off now.

Bah, I think next year I will try freetax.
