Go back to your "Deductions & Credits" Screen.
Scroll down to the bottom and select "Wrap up Tax Breaks".
You should continue through the screens until you see the following screen:
Your information will be summarized based upon your input. You have the option to see the breakdown or you can even select "Change my deduction".
Please note, TurboTax will select the option which provides the greater tax benefit for you.
Standard deduction versus Itemized deduction
Yes, I did see the screen shot you mentioned. It stated that it chose itemized deduction for me, but the refund amount showed on the top left side is the one using standard deduction. I tried to click the "change my deduction" button and chose itemized deduction again, but the refund amount on the top left side is unchanged.
And in the Federal Review section, it did say that Turbotax chose standard deduction for me. I'm really confused...
It could be that your income is lower than the standard deduction or itemized deduction amounts, or that you have sufficient credits on your tax return to absorb your income tax.
So, when you switch from standard deduction to itemized deduction, your refund does not change, because either amount reduces your tax to $0.
