TurboTax 2024 Bug: "Untitled" Dividend & Interest Entries Affect Tax Calculation Issue:
In TurboTax 2024, deleting a carried-over 1099-DIV/1099-INT entry from 2023 does not fully remove the associated amounts. Instead:
- The payer name changes to "Untitled",
- The dividend/interest amounts remain and are still included in Schedule B and tax computations,
- The "Untitled" entries do not appear in the list of interest & dividend payers, making them hard to detect.
Steps to Reproduce:
- Import the prior-year tax return (2023) into TurboTax 2024.
- Import the 1099-DIV and 1099-INT forms from a brokerage.
- Notice that some payers have changed names in the new 2024 forms.
- Delete the old (2023) payers manually.
- Check the list of dividend & interest payers → The deleted entries are gone (as expected).
- However, in Schedule B and tax calculations, the amounts from deleted payers remain under "Untitled."
- The only way to remove these amounts is to manually rename each "Untitled" entry, make them visible, and then delete them.
Expected Behavior:
- When a 1099-DIV/1099-INT payer is deleted, its amounts should also be removed from calculations.
- If TurboTax retains these amounts, the user should be notified instead of silently keeping them under “Untitled.”
- All carried-over payers (even deleted ones) should appear in the payer list until fully removed.
Impact:
- Users who delete old 1099-DIV/1099-INT payers may unknowingly overstate their dividend/interest income.
- Tax calculations could be incorrect without the user realizing.
- Manual intervention (renaming & deleting) is required to correct the issue.
Recommendation:
- Fix the deletion process: When deleting an old 1099-DIV/1099-INT payer, ensure the associated amounts are also removed from Schedule B.
- Show a warning: If TurboTax retains a dividend/interest amount from a deleted entry, notify the user and allow them to review it.
- Ensure visibility: All carried-over 1099-DIV/1099-INT entries should be visible in the payer list, even if they were auto-renamed as "Untitled."
