Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

Transmission failed because SSN already used...it appears you are trying to file the same return twice.

I tried to submit my tax return yesterday and I was given an error code stating that it appeared I was filing the same return twice and that my social security number had already been used? Then I find out that I accidentally somehow made two accounts using the same email, however I don’t remember ever filing a previous return for 2020. I can access both accounts and neither of them show me that I have filed and won’t let me put in my finalized return. I received an email saying that I should reach out to customer service if one of the accounts aren’t mine, but I am not sure what to do about getting my refund as quickly as possible. This is really important as I am struggling like a lot of other people during this pandemic financially. I appreciate any help you all can give me, thanks.

You can check your TurboTax filing status here:
https://shop.turbotax.intuit.com/efile/efile_status_lookup.jsp

Unless that shows accepted then you have not filed.

If you or a dependent that you are entitled to claim has already been claimed by another taxpayer, your e-filed return will reject since the SSN has already been used (either intentionally or in error such as a mistyped SSN).

Your only recourse is to file a correct tax return, claiming what you are entitled to claim, then print and mail the return.

The IRS will process both returns and pay any refunds. Shortly (within a year) the IRS will mail letters to both taxpayers asking if their tax return was filed in error and suggesting that they amend if they improperly claimed.

If neither taxpayer amends, the IRS will send a second letter asking for each taxpayers proof that they are entitled to the claim.

The IRS will evaluate each taxpayers claim and award the credit to one taxpayer, the other will have to payback any refund received plus interest and possible penalties.

Do not ignore the letters or you will loose.

if your error is that the primary tax payer SSN has already appeared on another return,

your only option is to file a paper return via US Mail.

Having two TurboTax accounts is irrelevant.

It means that it was finally submitted.  Probably processing now.

Please Call TurboTax to have them check for Identity Theft in the TurboTax System.

If a return with your information has been filed through TurboTax an agent will be able to file a report for Identity Theft.

If no return is found then You will need to contact the IRS.  Fill out form 14039 and mail it in with your return

If your return has been accepted by the IRS then all inquiries should be made to the IRS.  Use the information provided in the notice stating that your social security number has already been use to inquire.
