It says this:
You can prepare and print or e-file up to 5 of your own federal and state tax returns with TurboTax Desktop.
Why would I have more than one of "my own" federal and state returns.
More to the point, if I do the taxes for 3 people, no efile, one computer, but three individual returns, do I need to buy three copies of the software and can I do what I've always done?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Yes that hasn't changed. The Desktop program can do unlimited returns and efile 5. You don't need to buy another program.
See https://turbotax.intuit.com/corp/license/desktop.jsp
You are not licensed or permitted under this EULA to do any of the following: (i) allow any other person to use the Software; (ii) rent, loan, resell, share, distribute or redistribute the original CD or a copy of the Software to any other person or entity; (iii) make the Software available on any file-sharing or application hosting service; (iv) electronically send the Software to any other person or company; (v) copy the printed materials or user documentation accompanying the Software other than as necessary to support the uses permitted above; (vi) use the Software for any commercial purpose (i.e., tax return preparation for a fee or other consideration); or (vii) use the Software to electronically file more than five (5) federal returns
You can’t charge for your services to prepare returns. And you can’t install the program on computers that you don’t own. (This is a common misunderstanding—you can install the program on computers you own to prepare returns for family, but you were never technically allowed to install the program on other people’s computers for them to use). But you can prepare more than one return. (The license doesn’t specify friends, family or whatever, just that you can prepare multiple returns and efile the first 5.)
Thinking further, Intuit can't really put a counter on the number of tax documents you can create (you might want to create multiple test returns for different job, deduction, or investment scenarios, or you might test joint vs separate filing.) Imagine the outrage if Microsoft imposed an arbitrary limit on the number of powerpoint presentations you could create. What Intuit can do is limit who uses the program (only personal use, not paid or professional) and how many computers you can install the program on (you can install it on 5 computers that you own, you can't give copies of your paid program to other people.) (the 5 e-file limit comes from the IRS)
