I am having an issue reviewing my second 1099-R. When I click the “continue” button, I get the following error under state tax withheld (box 14): State tax shouldn’t be greater than gross distribution. It is not and is in fact hundreds less than the gross distribution. This error creates a hard stop and won’t let me progress. When I call the TurboTax number, it says I have to pay money to upgrade which is ridiculous considering that it is a technical issue. I did find another post with the same issue and it seems that their workaround was to submit the 1099-R without reviewing, but I don’t want to do that in case it affects anything on the backend. Please help!

Do you have an amount in box 16? If you have withholding in box 14 then for box 16 enter the same amount as in box 1.
On my physical 1099-R form box 14 has an amount but box 16 is blank. Should I still enter the amount from box 1 for box16?
Yes, actually If you have withholding in box 14 then for box 16 enter the same amount as in box 2a. If box 2a is blank use the amount from box 1.
Unfortunately I’m still getting the same error after entering the amount from box 2a in box 16. The first 1099-R was reviewed without a problem. I’m not sure why this second one is giving me such a hard time.
What is the error? Do you need to take RMD? There is a problem with RMD this year.
The error is “State tax shouldn’t be greater than gross distribution”. No RMD. I am decades away from retirement. This really seems like a technical issue that TT is having with the site.
Then all I can say to do is to delete that 1099R and enter it again manually filling in box 16. That usually fixes it. Could it be for boxes 17-19? Do the same thing for box 19 if you have an amount in box 17.
I tried the manual approach and got the same results (error). Boxes 17-19 are blank on my form.
I appreciate you trying.
I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:
TurboTax Online:
TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:
*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)
Thanks. The token number is 1273809.
I am not able to replicate this error on my end with the shared file. When this happens, what typically will resolve the issue is to open TurboTax in a different browser, use the Incognito mode for your browser (Ctrl+shift+N in Chrome and Edge) OR clear the cache and cookies in the current browser.
Sometimes data gets stuck in those cached files that will cause errors and when we can't replicate them, that is most frequently the culprit. If you continue to have problems after trying this, please do let us know.
@Sunnyc
I’m still having the issue. I cleared cookies in Chrome and tried again, tried incognito, downloaded and tried Edge, and tried the TT app. It’s the same result each time.
Is someone still looking into this?
Update: I was able to connect with an agent via telephone who was able to troubleshoot and resolve my issue.
