taxes on PFML wages

My husband was off work the last 3 months 2025 for personal medical reason, received PFML wages, taxes were not taken out,  The Employment security dept is not giving out any tax documents. Is this a wage that needs to be claimed and we will need to pay taxes on. There are different answers online, our tax preparer was also unsure and they  had to ask a head accountant, who said to just put it in to be safe, and for us to go online and make a tax payment.  With not getting any tax document to turn in to accountant, and unable to find actual answer I am confused.

Any help with this would be wonderful!

Thank you in advance

taxes on PFML wages

Based on IRS guidance issued for 2025, PFML wages for personal medical reasons are generally considered taxable income and must be reported, even if no tax document (1099-G or W-2) was received and no taxes were withheld.

If the leave was for your husband’s own health condition, the taxability would  depend on who paid the premiums. Because Washington PFML is funded by both, the portion attributable to the employer's contribution is taxable, while the portion from the employee’s contribution is generally tax-free.

Since the ESD is not providing a document, you could calculate the total payments received from your bank statements or the Washington PFML account portal.

It would be reported as "Other Income" on your tax return.

taxes on PFML wages

Thank you!! So I would need to contact his employer to find out how it was funded , also,  is it by percentages or just amounts? I feel I am going to have to figure out the exact information for the accountants office, since they weren't sure how it works & put in the full amount in as wages according to what they told me.

Thank you again

First, what state are you in?

Second, who told you that these were PFML wages?

Third, who paid you this money? an employer? the state? an insurance company?
