I would try deleting the TN tax return, then close the program. Reopen the program and add the TN return back in.
It sounds like something got stuck in the state program. Deleting and reentering should fix it.
Hi Dean,
Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it.
Unfortunately, I cannot figure out how to delete my TN State filing. I have already paid and e-filed my Federal and GA state returns. I have also paid for my TN return, but cannot e-file it due to this error. My only options are Edit the TN return or 'Start Over'. Both yield the same results with this error, preventing it from e-filing and asking me to print and file via postal mail.
Here are the full details of what happened.
I currently live overseas and my address is very long. It accepted without issue in my Federal and carried over to my GA return.
On the last step of my TN return, it threw an error saying "my address exceeds 23 characters" or something very similar. I then changed my address in the form -- there are two field to type this in, I think I typed it into the actual worksheet. It then threw the error I'm receiving now.
I went back to my Federal form and changed the address there (to the shorter one) and it carried over to both the TN and GA returns. However, the error still occurs in the TN return.
I've cleared the address, changed it in both text boxes and logged off of my computer, closed chrome, and the error still occurs.
This is clearly a bug. Is there a way to reach out to customer service directly via email? The call-me-back service is not working for me since I'm overseas. I also need to e-file.
Attached are some redacted screenshots.
Thanks,
Curt
You should only have to enter your address once and that's on the federal side. You don't need to re-enter your details again on the TN return. Go back to the TN worksheet and delete the address.
Hi Victor,
I was just on a call with support, but we ended up getting disconnected before fixing the issue.
I have deleted the address in the lower and upper text boxes. I've run smart check again and it asks me to enter an address. I've entered in the address, hit continue and I get the same error.
I've deleted the address (left it blank) and gone back and started the TN state over. It says it brings in the Federal Return information, but it actually doesn't because I get the same error saying my address is blank. The Federal return has the correct and was submitted with the address.
Support asked me to delete the form, but I cannot since it does not give me the option to delete the Information Worksheet. I deleted the other two forms under the TN section and re-ran the return and got the same error.
Basically, something is messed up.
Any other help you can send my way would be very appreciated!
Curt
You will only need to file a Tennessee state tax return if you received more than $1,250 in taxable interest and dividends ($2,500 if you are married filing jointly).
When your address on your 1040 is in Tennessee, TurboTax creates a state return. if you do not meet the filing requirements you do not need to file the return. Tennessee does not tax wage income only interest and dividends.
If you do not need to file, you should delete the return.
Hi this doesn't help my problem. I do need to file a TN tax return.
Can you point me to someone who can help me or provide a refund? There is a bug in your software.
Also this website does not trigger emails when I get replies even though I have selected the option.
Hello, this issue was never resolved. I spoke to Support again, shared screens and walked them through the problem with multiple attempts to fix it and they concurred it is an issue with the software. I was provided a refund, but now have to print out and mail in the TN return instead of e-filing.
Someone on the SW team should look at this bug.
this is not actually "Solved" but "there is a bug in your software" is the Best Answer
