Student loan interest

Hi I have a daughter who is a dependent that has a 1098-T. Am I allowed to claim this in my federal return?

I also have a son who is not a dependent that I have helped pay his Sallie Mae loan. Am I allowed to claim the loan interest?

Student loan interest

If the student listed on the 1098-T is your dependent, enter the 1098-T on your return, even if your dependent paid the tuition.

To enter the form:

  1. Go to Federal Taxes,
  2. Go to Deductions and Credits.
  3. Scroll down to Education and click show more.
  4. Scroll down to Expenses and Scholarships (Form 1098-T) and click Start
  5. Answer Yes for the question if you received a 1098-T.

You can deduct qualified student loan interest payments only if you are legally obligated to pay the interest as a borrower or cosigner of the federal or private student loan
