If the form re-generates, that means that there is an entry in the software that needs to be removed or changed.
If this is the case, return back to the point in the software where the question that populates the form is asked.
If you are using TurboTax Online, please try the following steps to see if the error message will clear:
I did, but still 8915F is linked as not Done causing the error. My 1099R box 7 codes are given as 8, J. Is this causing the problem, I wonder?
No, your Form 1099-R with codes 8 and J shouldn't be causing an issue.
To verify, did you delete both "Form 8915-F" and "Qualified 2020 Disaster Retirement Distr" and didn't take any disaster distribution in 2022 or prior to 2022?
Please follow these steps in TurboTax Online:
In TurboTax Desktop
Please also verify that you didn't accidentally select that your Form 1099-R with codes 8 and J was a disaster distribution:
Thanks @DanaB27 , this is resolved.
This is what I did and it cleared the error:
- Select "Form 8915E Wks"
- Uncheck box C (it was checked), "if you received any distribution in 2022 related to a disaster that occurred in 2021 or 2022. Check this box."
After unchecking this, the error was gone so are the forms.
I did not even have to delete the forms, 8915-F or 8915E Wks.
Thanks @DanaB27 again.
On the Turbotax desktop instruction above by @DanaB27, 3. is the key to resolve 1099-R error not related to disaster related distribution.
I would like to "Mark as best Answer" for @DanaB27 .
Unchecking the questions in the work sheet, Form 8915E Wks, fixed the error on Form 8915-F.
Selecting "No" to the disaster related distribution question did not.
I would like to report this to TurboTax. As a user when we answer No to the question, the user assumes that the No is taken.
.
Hi! I am still having this issue for my 2022 tax returns. I keep pressing “no” but the form keeps showing up and I get an error. How can this be fixed??? I already paid for the desktop version and I’m frustrated.
Hi @ninaor3,
This is what I did:
- Click Forms and find Form 8915E Wks
- Select "Form 8915E Wks"
- Uncheck box C (it was checked), "if you received any distribution in 2022 related to a disaster that occurred in 2021 or 2022. Check this box."
After unchecking this, the error was gone so are the forms.
Apparently selected 'NO' mark for disaster is disappearing in both locations and smart check show error again

Hi @tggrinshpon and @KatrinaLO,
Selecting "No" to the questions did not work for me, either.
========================================================
- Go to Forms and search for "8915E Wks " (this is Form 8915F worksheet, not the Form8915)
- See if there were any boxes checked. If you see boxes checked on "...... related to disaster.... , uncheck these boxes.
- After this I did see the Form8915F. And the SmartCheck cleared the error.
========================================================
In my case, I saw a box checked on "if you received any distribution in 2022 related to a disaster that occurred in 2021 or 2022. Check this box."
@KatrinaLO and @tggrinshpon,
A correction, I meant to state, "After this I did not see the Form8915F"
I am stuck also I marked No on both questions but it will not let me go any further because of the Form 8915-F
It is a bit annoying because its the only issue that needs review and it wont let me get past it. So what do I do now. I have don every step that has been stated and still the same issue!! Really not happy about it either this it's been two weeks of trying to get past it already! Help Please
Solution to this problem is an easy task
I have tried the steps outlined in the answer and the issue persists. I even deleted the 1099-R and then re-entered it from scratch. I answered the question about if the retirement distributions received in 2022 were due to a disaster in 2021 or 2022 as NO, but I still get the error. Is there another procedure that I can follow or is there a technical issue with TurboTax? Thank you!
I've read several procedures to fix this problem. None worked for me. However, this one works and it's very easy to implement. Thank you!
