State Withholding Entered with Sale of Vacation Home Not Showing in State Tax Return

I entered GA tax withheld under Federal Taxes, Investment Income from Form 1099-S, on a non-resident sale. Why doesn't this amount carry over to GA NR income tax return?

If you'd like, we can look at your return and see exactly what you see to  help come to a resolution. The return will be scrubbed and won't include any of your personal details.

If you're using TurboTax Online:

Once you're logged in to your account,

- on the left hand panel, click on Tax Tools and then choose Tools

- on the pop up window, select Share my file with Agent

- you'll see a message saying you'll give us a copy of your tax return. Your personal information will be changed so we can't see any private information.

- click okay and you'll get another message with a token

If you're using TurboTax Desktop:

  • Click on Online in the top menu of TurboTax Desktop for Windows
  • Select 'Send Tax File to Agent'
  • Write down or send an image of your token number and state then place in this issue.
  • We can then review your exact scenario for a solution

Please reply to this message with your token so that we can further assist you. Let us know all other states, if any, that are included on the return.

Hi KeshaH, thanks.

Token is 135376258-13639973

State is Georgia

I obscured the token # by mistake.  If the above isn't correct, please try [removed]-13639973

I don't see where you could enter the tax withheld in the investment income section of TurboTax. It would normally be entered in the Estimates and Other Taxes paid section, in the Deductions and Credits portion of the federal tax entries in TurboTax.

Use the State estimated taxes option under Estimated taxes for 2024:

State Withholding Entered with Sale of Vacation Home Not Showing in State Tax Return

It was entered under the McMichael & Gray sale, 2nd part of the step by step entry "I have more info to enter"

The applicable data enry fields are "State Name", "State indentification #" and "State tax withheld"

The value in the last field is $1,308.00

The substitute Form 1099-S I received did not have a State ID #, so until I get i from the real estate sale closing agent (McMichael), I have left it blank

It doesn't seem correct to also enter it as a State estimated tax payment.

The IRS Form 1099-S only reports gross proceeds of a sale of real estate. The issuer of the 1099-S will need to send it directly to the state of Georgia as well. This is a separate process from reporting the amount you paid on your tax return.

You can enter state withholding done at the time of sale in TurboTax Online, in the Federal section:

  1. Go to Deductions & Credits
  2. Select Estimated Tax Payments
  3. Click Start or Revisit next to State estimated taxes for 2024
  4. Scroll down to Additional Payments
  5. Enter the Date Paid and Amount Paid

The amount can be entered either as a state estimated payment or other income tax payment, under Additional Payments. You won't need to enter a state ID number. The amount entered in the Federal section will flow through to your state return.

The amount withheld is part of your federal and/or state tax paid for the year rather than an expense of the sale.

Thank you. I followed your guidance and the GA tax withholding is now reflected in the GA return. My only other suggestion is for Turbotax to remove the option to fill in the state and tax withheld on the page where the Form 1099-S is entered.
