State where I live
When putting my personal information I'm being asked in what state I live in. I'm currently not living in the U.S. so I selected "Foreign or U.S. Possession."
However, after completing my federal return I received this message from TT "We noticed that you didn't enter the state where you live at the beginning of your federal return. We recommend entering this information and completing your federal return before starting your state return. Finishing your federal return first helps ensure a complete and accurate tate return."
I can't select any U.S. state bc that is N/A to me. Should I leave it as it is and continue with the state return? Or what should I do? I want to make sure I am filing my return correctly.

The program is looking to find your resident state. You comment that you are going to file a state return. This leads me to believe that you are a resident of a state and are just not in the US. You can use that state as your resident state. There are many reasons to not be in the US.
If you do not have a state relationship, keep the Foreign / US Possession.

State where I live
Thank you Amy for the quick response. Here is my situation below:
I did receive NY income at the beginning of 2020 because I worked there and that's where I lived. That is why I need to file the NY state return.
I do not have a residence in NY anymore, I moved to Mexico in 2020 and I'm still here . I am planning on going back to the US but unsure where.
Also, under my personal info it asks for a mailing address, I put a Texas address because I can receive mail there safely and I do not want to miss any mail from the IRS.
I'm not sure if im putting my residency status correctly because the options that turbo tax gives me based on the information provided don't seem to apply to me. Can you please advise what should I do?
Also, outside of my W-2 it asks for my 1099-DIV/INT income forms what amount comes from NY. I don't have a way to tell that so I am prorating the balances based on the amount of months I lived in NY out of the whole year. Is this correct?
Thanks!

Part year NY return and TX address works well. You may want to say TX resident for now since TX has no state tax. The program is just confused, like I was. You want the forms to be correct. If you want the TX address on your forms, go with TX.
The interest can be prorated. The dividends can be verified based on how often they are paid or you can just prorate them as well. Good luck!
