You will need to file the CA return by mail as well and with a copy of the W-7.

It is advisable to mail Certified Mail since the W-7 does report sensitive or private information.

What you should do is WAIT for the ITIN number for the child  to file the CA return.   Put the return on extension if needed but wait for the number.   Paper filing with the W-7 attached will delay the processing of the return for possibly months.

  • @Critter-3 , the ITIN will take 9-11 weeks to be processed. Will CA State Tax return by mail take more than that too??

@KrisD15 Do I need to attach the Federal Tax return as well??

If you file the CA return without the ITIN it could delay the return much longer than simply waiting for the number ... you can risk it if you wish or do the safe method and simply wait for the ITIN and efile the return.
