State: Paying estimates or catching up
- The state return needs to know if you made payments during the year that count as tax paid for 2024 - it could be a lump or multiple estimates.
- If you had a tax bill due when you filed your return last year, that was paying 2023 taxes with your return. Paying your 2023 tax bill does not count on your 2024 state return.
Federal: If you are itemizing federal, state taxes paid are a deduction. Lump sum or estimates doesn't matter.
