On my return in the state income taxes paid section, it shows a very large amount for State Mandatory Taxes for Oregon. This amount is about equal to my gross wages for state Paid Family Leave + my gross wages for State Transit Tax. I've triple-checked my W-2 input and everything looks correct. Why is this amount so high?

The taxes should be pulling in from the forms you entered. You generally don't need to make additional entries. You state that you triple checked the w2 input, look at your box 14 input and state tax withheld in box 17. You could have swapped the income and the taxes boxes and once you do that, you are sure it is right. Double check the PFML. The transit tax is only 0.1% so perhaps the decimal is in the wrong place or the w2 has the decimals in the wrong place. If the w2 is wrong, you can correct a box 14 issue. If it is box 17, you will need to contact the employer for a corrected w2.
You are super smart to have caught the problem. Take a break and come back with fresh eyes.
I had this error under Other Income Taxes in fed section-Estimates and other taxes paid. The details shows the "Sate mandatory taxes" = $xxx and this added up, directly to the 3 entries in box 14.. I think this is a new item this year... everything else on my return looked perfect and I had no errors.
Thanks. That was the same experience I had. Hopefully this is just a harmless glitch that doesn't impact any other parts of the return.
It's a glitch in the W2 auto-import of TurboTax, and yes, it may have material impact on your taxes. As an example the miscalculated state tax amount skews the decision on the standard vs itemized deductible.
TurboTax erroneously puts Oregon EQ PFL Wages reported on W2 box 14 into the OR EQ PFL tax category. To fix it edit your W2 and label the wages as "other" instead.
Thanks. I just made that change to my W2 entries but don't understand why this reduced my Fed refund, as I am still well over the $10,000 SALT limit and am still itemizing deductions.
There is a bug in the software in the calculation
Box 14 has 4 lines
2 taxes are listed along with the wage level that is used for each (the wage levels are different)
Turbo tax is adding the 2 taxes plus the wage level for entry (it excludes the last wage level)
I had to go into the form and manually remove the 2 wage levels for the calculation to work properly
Hello,
My "Other Income Taxes" doubled from last year.
There's no way because I had no job changes or any drastic changes.
I did notice that it was adding the $24K from box #14 where it has these 2 entries:
OR EQ PFL W/H = $150
OR EQ PFL WAG = $24K <----where did this number come from??
Thank you in advanced.
Return to your w2 and edit box 14, removed the PFL wages line. Box 14 is partially tax information and partially non-tax information. You can safely remove the wage information.
