Son filing taxes

He does not because his standard deduction is greater than what he earned.

  • However, if he paid Federal or state INCOME TAX he would have to file to recover it.
  • If that is his only income he can file with TurboTax for free.
  • If he does, please be sure that he indicates that 'Someone else can claim me as a dependent."

Son filing taxes

You don't provide enough information.

If this is your son's only income, then no, he is not required to file.  However, if he has federal withholding in box 2 or state tax withholding in box 17, he would have to file a return to get that withholding refunded.  If he qualifies as your tax dependent because he is a full time student, make sure he answers "yes, I can be claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return" if he files.

However, if he has more than $450 of other taxable income not from working, and he is your tax dependent for 2024, he is required to file.  "Unearned income" can include prizes, scholarships (sometimes), income from hobbies, or interest, dividends and other investment income (if he owns investments in his name).   The rules for taxing unearned income are slightly different for someone who is a dependent of someone else.  If he does not qualify as your dependent, this rule does not apply to him.
