My partner is a sole proprieter. I work with them as an independent contractor (self employed).
We are getting maried next month and will be filing joint taxes in illinois for the 2019 tax year.
We are unsure if the business needs to be changed to an LLC or if it can be left as is? I dont work for him, just in the same space with him, but technically i am working within the business.
How do we proceed with this for the next return?

Nothing needs to change just because you are getting married ... you can still have separate Sch C's on a joint return the same way as you do on separate returns.
from what we had understood, the business would need to change from sole propreiter to LLP or LLC because even though im an independent contractor i still also deal with most of the clientele and other things regardless.
In your top question you said you work with them. Who is "them"? More than just your partner? They might have a partnership and need to be filing a partnership return or multi member LLC. You can still be a 1099Misc independent contractor for it. If you are married on Dec 31 you can file a Joint return. Nothing you said affects that.
partner - as in the person im marrying. not business partner. As stated we are both sole propreitors
Yes I understood you meant partner that you are marrying. But you said you work with "them". Who is them? Sounds like your fiancé has other partners? You can both be self employed sole proprietors on a Joint return.
