Smart Check finds errors in Asset Entry Worksheet but data is pulled from previous years without my knowledge.

Someone flagged my previous question as a spam but it is a serous inquiry!  Thank you in advance for replying to my question.

I'm working on my 2019 return and use download version of Home & Biz.  When I run Smart Check to review my fed return it finds errors in Misc Itemized Deduction Wks - Asset Entry Worksheet (Computer)  and says I need to enter "k. Special Depreciation Allowance Deduction" and "l. AMT Special Depreciation Allowance Ded."

This is strange because I didn't make any entries on this section for 2019 return.  In addition I see Misc Itemized Deduction sheet has some boxes checked that I don't recognize, i.e. "18 Investment counsel and advisory fees" and "19 Certain attorney and accounting fees" "20 Safe deposit box rental fees", among others.  I've never even rented safe deposit box in my entire life!

This is also a problem as I would like to list computer under Form 4562 Depreciation and Amortization Report for business expense.

It looks like Turbotax pulled most of the data from previous returns as I found the similar info on my 2018 return which I also didn't enter or notice when I filed it.

I do, however, remember providing my computer purchase price and date but it was some years back.

P.S. I thought all the data was pulled from previous returns but I noticed that 2019 has some updated numbers on "51 year of depreciation", "52 Depreciation basis", "56 AMT depreciable basis."   I also noticed that both of the errors (Asset Entry k & l) 2019 Smart Check found were left blank on 2018.  Should I just fill 0 to both lines for 2019?

I hope someone has the answer for this mystery (to me at least.) Please help!  Thank you.

Yes, you can fill in $0 for these lines if no special depreciation was deducted in the year that you first entered this information in TurboTax.

Miscellaneous deductions are not allowed for most people on the federal return, so if you don't file a state that still allows them, you can just delete the Misc. Deduction Worksheet.

Hi JulieS,

Thank you so much for responding to my question.  Although I vaguely recall claiming my computer I've been selecting standard deduction for years and am wondering why Turbotax includes this Misc Itemized Deduction Wks - Asset Entry Worksheet on my returns and even find errors.  Also I don't believe my state, Hawaii, allows itemized deduction, either.

For 2019 return I would like to claim the same computer in Depreciation and Amortization Report for business expense since I started using it 60% for business on 1/1/2019.  I am assuming it will result in more deduction since it qualifies for One Time Special Depreciation.  Would you please let me know the best way to go about this?  Can I simply delete the Misc. Deduction Worksheet?

Thank you for your help!

Hi,

Were you able to figure this out? I'm stuck at the same place and no one seems to know the problem. Posted here and also chatted with Turbo Tax customer support.

Appreciate if you can provide any input.

Thanks
