federal form 8829 is the home office deduction. employees don't get it. so, as self-employed, which does not seem to be the version you are using, it would either be a deduction on schedule C or maybe even schedule E. For federal it is not an itemized deduction. your state situation is unclear, so we need more information.
if you are not self-employed it would seem the only home expenses you could deduct as itemized deductions for federal purpose are real estate taxes and home mortgage interest and form 8829 is not used.
There are not enough facts to understand your situation, but I can make a guess.
You are a W-2 worker, and you entered a home office deduction. Turbotax will not put form 8829 on your federal return, because the home office deduction is not allowed for W-2 workers on federal taxes. But, you live in a state that does allow the deduction on your state tax return. As a result, you claimed the deduction on your state's version of the itemized deduction form, but turbotax did not include a copy of the federal form 8829 because it didn't prepare one.
Because you don't give enough details, we can't really help you solve this. But since this is an issue with the program function (not including the correct info on the state return) I recommend you call customer support and ask for program help with your state return.
Depending on which version of Turbotax you are using, you might also be able to force it to print a form 8829, or you might be able to find a worksheet that you can pull numbers from to fill out your own 8829 by hand (copying the numbers from the Turbotax worksheet).
But I would start by calling support.
you guessed accurately, thank you for providing such clear explanation with excellent point. my home expenses are being questioned by nys missing form 8829. I'm obviously not a tax expert and rely entirely on turbo tax and their compliance with filing proper forms. what you wrote makes total sense. I'll follow up with their customer support. greatly appreciate your help
