Question

Should I say I had insurance coverage all year?

Due to nonpayment of premiums, my Obamacare coverage was cancelled retroactively for Nov & Dec. But when I select the option to pick the 10 months I was covered, I don't get prompted for 1095-A info. It appears I need to instead say I had health insurance coverage all year - even though technically I did not.

I have the same situation as you,I want to make sure the steps:First, select option one”We all had heathl insurance all year”to enter Form1095A info, then backtrack to choose option “I’ll pick who and which months” to uncheck Nov&Dec,is it correct? Thank you!

Yes, that is exactly what I did and it worked perfectly. Actually, my recollection is that the other option would have been to say at the outset that I had health insurance all year then enter my 1095A info and NOT backtrack to change it. The outcome is the same. However, I just felt more comfortable backtracking and de-selecting Nov & Dec. I felt it was more honest.

Since you have already entered the 10 months coverage from your 1095-A. The system will not calculate any penalty because your gap period without coverage is less than 3 months.

To enter Health Insurance information, please follow these steps using your Desktop/ CD/ Download version.

  1. Click on Federal Taxes tab
  2. Then, click on the Health Insurance tab just below it
  3. Select I'll pick which months I had it (see Slide 1 attached)
  4. Click on Continue
  5. Check all the boxes except Nov and Dec (see Slide 2 attached)
  6. Click on Continue
  7. Select the reason for the 2 months (see Slide 3 attached)
  8. Click Continue. The next page should tell you "Based on your situation, the penalty has been waived."
  9. Then, click on Continue to answer the questions through the interview pages
  10. You will come to a page asking for type of plan, select the 1095-A. Then, the following page will ask for the detail of the 1095-A information, Besure to fill out exactly from the information on your form (see Slide 4 attached)
  11. Then, click on Continue to save your work

ScottT, this is not quite my scenario because none of the reasons listed for getting penalty waived apply to me. Therefore, when I select none of those reasons and then continue, I will not get prompted for 1095-A info. The only way to get prompted for 1095-A is to say I had insurance all year. After doing so and entering my 1095-A info, I found I can then backtrack to de-select Nov and Dec and it appears to have saved my 1095-A. Please address my unusual situation if you would.
