Hello, I have Turbotax DESKTOP Home & Business product (for Mac) and was having difficulty transferring data from my prior-year (2024) tax return into the 2025 program/return. I contacted Turbotax support and an agent initiated a screen share to help diagnose the problem. This procedure somehow allowed the 2024 "...24.tax2024" file to be displayed and its data to be imported into the 2025 return. That was good... BUT while working to accomplish this I briefly displayed the screen on Turbotax 2025 program showing my social security number and other sensitive data -- data which had just been imported along with all other 2024 data which was the purpose of my call to support.
Question: do Turbotax agents working with customers using desktop versions see customers' actual data such as Social Security number (when those data are visible to customer) during screen share, or do TT agents just see the program and its labels/features without personal/sensitive data being visible?
Thank you!
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Screensharing with TurboTax agents and Experts is totally confidential. While your information is visible via the screenshare, no visual record or personally identifiable information is retained after the session is over.
If you have any other concerns, please call 1-800-4-INTUIT (1-800-446-8848) and ask to speak to someone about identity protection.
Thank you for addressing my question. This is something many people are curious about, but until now I have not seen this concern addressed with precision.
Point taken that no information from a support call is retained electronically in the Turbotax system, but the fact that my data (e.g., social security number) are visible to the Turbotax expert is a little concerning. There is nothing to prevent an expert from writing down with pen and paper, or photographing their own screens with a phone, any information they glimpse. Thus, we who are relying on Turbotax for support (whether technical support, as in my case, or for tax advice) are counting on Turbotax to hire and carefully oversee personnel who are trustworthy. Human nature and ethical standards being what they are, I feel reluctant to count on that.
But now we know that TT agents/experts can in fact see our data and not just the program's labels and features, so each person can make up his/her own mind as to whether they want to take this leap of faith or not.
