Dependent with $4500

My son is 22 and in college.  I claim him on my taxes as a dependent.  He made about $4500 in W2 and 1009-MISC income this year, and $105 was withheld from his W2 income as federal taxes.  TurboTax is calculating that he owes $89 in taxes, but I thought he would not owe any taxes since the threshold is $12,000 in 2018.  Shouldn’t he get that whole $105 back?

It depends on how much 1099-MISC income he had. He won't owe any income tax, but if he had more than $432 of 1099-MISC income he has to pay self-employment tax. If the $89 is self-employment tax, he probably had about $630 of 1099-MISC income.

Self employment tax will be on Schedule 4 line 57. The total from Schedule 4 will appear on Form 1040 line 14.
