Second State filing

I wasn't sure if I needed to file second state (CALIFORNIA NR)    I saw on here that you could do a draft on Turbo Tax????   Only thing I see is to pay first.

Our  taxable Income from FED is 0

Income from California is $2775    I'm thinking with exemptions and standard deduction we owe 0.

Do I need to file anyway???     Is there a way to use TT as a draft??

Second State filing

As a California nonresident, you pay tax on your taxable income from California sources.

Sourced income includes, but is not limited to:

  • Services performed in California
  • Rent from real property located in California
  • The sale or transfer of real California property
  • Income from a California business, trade or profession

See here for the California income threshold requirements for filing a return for nonresidents.

You would need to file a California Nonresident or Part-Year Resident Income Tax Return (Form 540NR), to report the California sourced portion of your compensation if it exceeds the threshold.

You can prepare Federal and State returns in TurboTax Online without paying first, but you may need to pay in order to view all of the completed forms.

To view your entire return or just your 1040 form before you e-file:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account
  2. Open or continue your return
  3. Select Tax Tools from the menu (if you don't see this, select the menu icon in the upper-left corner)
  4. With the Tax Tools menu open, you can then:
    • Preview your entire return: Select Print Center and then Print, save or preview this year's return (you may be asked to register or pay first)
    • View only your 1040 form: Select Tools. Next, select View Tax Summary in the pop-up, then Preview my 1040 in the left menu
