Schedule C Other expenses amount must not add up to negative value

I keep getting this message, and I see a -$1 amount in "total other expenses" line 48. For the life of me, I can't figure out why I'm getting a negative amount for expenses, or where this number is coming from, but it won't let me efile unless I resolve it.

Line 48, "Total Other Expenses" is a summary of expenses not included in the detailed lines of expenses.  To see these entries in TurboTax Self-Employed Online please follow these steps:

  1. Within your tax return use the magnifying glass icon to search for schedule c
  2. Click the Jump to link
  3. Click Edit for the line of work
  4. Scroll down to Other miscellaneous expenses and click Edit
  5. Check for any negative number entries

Schedule C Other expenses amount must not add up to negative value

I don't have any "other miscellaneous expenses" and none of the expenses on my schedule C are negative number entries. The program seems to have some glitch that is saying that I have -$1 in Other Expenses--the is nothing on my return to suggest such a thing.

It would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2021" file that is experiencing this issue.

You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information.  If you would like to do this, here are the instructions:

Go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.

  1. Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
  2. A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
  3. On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
  4. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is.  Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.
  5. Reply to this thread with your Token number. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.

I’ve got the same exact problem. What I’ve entered in the program is not what is showing up on the review of schedule C. There’s something for -10,000 on there that I didn’t put there… among other things.

QB self-employed is linked to my TT, so I don’t know if it auto transferred a bunch of information? But that still doesn’t seem correct. Every time I try to “review” it .. it starts over again. Ugh.

Advise?

This message is often created when you import your QuickBooks info into TurboTax, or when you had entries last year that carried over to this year.

You will need to look for expense entries with a description and no amount, or vice versa. Be sure to include expense categories that you did not use this year. TurboTax will use "Misc Exp" for any entry it can't process.

Your other option is to preview Schedule C. With TurboTax Online, you need to pay for your return first. Previewing your 1040 will show you the net income from your business, but not the actual Schedule C.

Additional Info: How do I preview my 1040?

You have two lines under Other Expenses that imported from QB Self-Employed: one for <$124> with a description of "Xxxx/xxxxxxxx/xxx xxxxxxxx" (masked by the token return process) and another for $13 with a description of "Xxxxx xxxxx xxx xxxxxxxxx." These total to <$111> and you cannot have negative expenses.

Neither of these two lines appear under Business Expenses in the Step-by-Step interview, so they can't be directly corrected. Your best option is to add a new Miscellaneous Expense that reverses the $124 credit expense (positive number), then add another with the correct amount (positive number). However, you should first find these expenses in Quickbooks so you know what they are and why they appear as other expenses.

Try the solution offered by @TurboTax Val to see if you can resolve it by zeroing it out.

  • Add a new Miscellaneous Expense that reverses the negative value to credit expense (positive number).  If the rest of your expenses are already in the return this should solve your problem.
