RMD distribution

If the taxes on an RMD is paid during the same year, what line should I put it on (e.g. 4a and 4b 1040SR)?

The RMD will be on the Form 1099-R that will issued to you in January 2025 for the RMD distributed in 2024.

The gross amount of the distribution from box 1 of the 1099-R is entered on the Form 1040 Line 4a and the taxable amount of the distribution from box 2 of the 1099-R is entered on Line 4b (assuming the distribution was from an IRA)

Federal taxes withheld from the distribution (if any) will be in box 4 of the Form 1099-R.  The taxes withheld will be entered on the Form 1040 Line 25b.

To enter, edit or delete a form 1099-R -

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
On IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), click the start or update button

Or enter 1099-r in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to 1099-R

If the entire amount of IRA distributions is taxable, line 4a of Form 1040 will be blank.  The taxable amount will appear only on line 4b.

The tax software should determine the amounts to be entered on Line 4a, 4b, or both.

If you are making manual entries, refer to the relevant IRS instructions, or post the scenario here.

RMD distribution

the gross RMD for an IRA goes on 4a the taxable amount goes on 4b of the 1040, but these amounts should be coming from 1099-R entry. any direct entry on 4a or 4b is an override which will prevent e-filing and void accuracy guarantee

federal withholding should appear in box 4 of the 1099-R and flows to 1040 line 25b
