I had a 2021 contribution to a Roth IRA returned in 2022 before the tax deadline. I received a 1099-R showing the distribution, with codes J and P.
Is the amount supposed to be included on Form 1040, Line 4a? The Form 8606 Instructions don't say anything about returns of contributions from the previous year.
TurboTax doesn't include the amount, so I wanted to be sure.

No, the distribution won't show on your tax return in 2022 since the code "P" in box 7 means that it belongs in 2021.
