To calculate your passive loss carryover into 2024, take the total unused losses carried from 2022 and subtract the amount you used to offset income in 2023. The remaining amount is your carryforward loss that rolls into 2024.  This should agree with the unallowed loss listed on the 2023 Form 8582, Page 2.

To enter your carryover from 2023, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. Navigate to the rentals section:
    • TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to rentals.
    • TurboTax Desktop: Search for rentals and select the Jump to link
  3. Click edit next to your rental property.
  4. On the rental property info screen, scroll down and click edit next to Carryovers, limitations, at risk info, etc.
  5. Answer Yes on the screen that asks, Did (rental) have any passive losses carried over from 2023? Enter the carryovers on the screen.
