Rejected federal tax return by IRS, Code: IND-181-01. IP PIN is missing

Hello,

I have e-filed my 2022 TurboTax 100 return 4 times with IRS, and they are all rejected based on the IRS code, IND-181-01 - stating that "The Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) for the first taxpayer on your return is missing". Every time, I retype my IP PIN, save the TurboTax file, and e-file again, and once again IRS rejects it.  My IP PIN is the correct one, and I have used it successfully for at least the past 5 years. I called TurboTax at 1800 phone number but no live customer support. Would appreciate your comments.

Thanks,

Tom2000

The IRS sends a new IP PIN every year.

From the IRS:  The IRS IP PIN is a 6-digit number assigned to eligible taxpayers to help prevent the misuse of their Social Security number on fraudulent federal income tax returns. A new IP PIN will be generated each year.

Here are two ways to navigate to the section to enter the 6 digit IP PIN:

  • Log in and open your return ("Take me to my return")
  • Once the return is open, then go to the Federal Taxes tab.
  • Subtab Other Tax Situations
  • Scroll down to Other Return Info.
  • Choose Identity Protection PIN and Start (or Revisit.)
  • Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"

Or another way:

  • Open your return if not already open.  ("Take me to my return.")
  • Once the return is open, click at the top on MY ACCOUNT, then choose TOOLS.
  • In the Tools window choose TOPIC SEARCH.
  • Enter IP PIN without quotes.
  • In the selection list highlight IP PIN and click GO.
  • Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"

The IP Pin is different than the 5-digit signature Pin. Additionally, the IP Pin will change each and every year. This is an Identity Protection Pin.

You can get an Identity Protection pin here, or if you lost your IP PIN, you can go here to Retrieve IP PIN.

Rejected federal tax return by IRS, Code: IND-181-01. IP PIN is missing

Thanks for the feedback.  Where do I have to enter the IP PIN? The TurboTax weblink rejection file takes me to update my 5-digit PIN, which does not make sense since it is correct anyway, while the IRS rejection statement mentions the IP PIN, which shows that the TurboTax suggestion to update my PIN is NOT related to the IRS rejection due to the IP PIN.

In the previous 5 years, I did not have to get a new IP PIN from IRS, and my TurboTax 1040 return e-filings went through successfully. Why this year, IRS rejects my e-fil due to IP PIN?

Also where do I update the IP PIN on the Desktop 2022 Turbotax Home and Business 1040 return? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I have my 6-digit IP Pin. The  Turbotax signature page box to e-file my taxes only has space for a 5-digit IP Pin. How do I enter a 6-digit pin when there is only space for 5-digit pin number?

To enter, edit or delete a 6 digit IP PIN

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Other Tax Situations
Scroll down to Other Return Info
On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button

Or enter ip pin in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ip pin

Thank you for responding. I have followed the steps you suggested and on the e-file signature page the box for IP Pin will only allow me to type in 5 digits. My pin is 6 digits.

The e-file PIN is any 5 digits you select.  It has nothing to do with the 6 digit IP PIN you have already entered in the TurboTax section for an IP PIN as I previously posted.

Sorry for my confusion. It worked! Federal return has been accepted. Thank you.

Took me 20 minutes of searching for this. Thank you so much for answering!

If I answer “No” to the question, “Did anyone in your family get an Identity Protection PIN from the IRS for this years’s taxes?”, why does my return continue to be rejected with Code IND-181-01 error? No one in our house experienced identity theft (thankfully) nor did we receive a IP PIN from the IRS.

If you are continuing to be rejected, it would be best to give us a call here, so we can better assist you with this. @KathyHamlin

Yep. I had the same problem. Intuit really did a bad job at making the IP PIN easy to find. They should also add text next to the self selected PIN to distinguish it from the IP PIN.

I'd go as far as to put "*this is not your IP PIN. Click here to navigate to where the IP PIN is entered."
