rejected efile

I just filed my grandson's 2023 taxes in the last month and were paper mailed.

I have just completed his 2024 taxes and efiled them.   I keep getting a reject due to AGI from 2023 --   I saw on an earlier post to enter "0"     I just want to confirm that is what I should do to try efile again, or am I better of mailing --    His NY keeps saying it needs to be efiled but it will not accept efile due IRS not accepting.

Try using zero as the 2023 AGI.  If zero does not work then file by mail.

New York prefers e-filed returns, but there are certain circumstances that make it necessary for you to file your NY return by mail and the state DOES allow mailed returns.    If you could not or did not e-file your federal return then your NY return cannot be e-filed.   It has to be mailed.   It is not possible to e-file any state return if the federal return was not e-filed and accepted by the IRS.

When you entered his AGI, did you enter 0 or did you enter the amount that was on his return last year?  You should enter the amount that is on  his return from 2023.  If for some reason that is not accepted, then you can check his online account to find out what the IRS has on file for him.

If that doesn't work, then you would need to print and mail his return.  When you print and mail the federal return, you can also print and mail the NY return.  They do have exceptions to the e-file rule and this is one of them.

  • I'm going through the rejection process also. How did you fix it? Also, they debited my account and I dont have anything to show for it! Very inconvenient.

@Myturn If your e-file is being rejected for AGI, you can try using zero and e-file.  If that does not work and you cannot e-file, then you need to file by mail.  Print, sign and date the return in ink and mail it.  Your TurboTax fee is the same whether you e-file or mail it in an envelope.
