Recovery Rebate Tax Credit

I claimed the recovery rebate on my 2020 tax return because I did not receive either stimulus payments due to being claimed as a dependent on 2019 tax return however I am no longer a dependent. On my tax return document it says my federal refund is $2,132 however the app only says $332 and I never received my $1800 rebate credit in my federal tax return that I received today. Any help in getting that $1800?

You aren't eligible to receive the stimulus payment if you were claimed as a dependent in 2019.

  • The first stimulus payment of $1,200 is based on your 2018 and 2019 income tax returns.
  • The second stimulus payment of $600 is based on your 2019 income tax return.

For additional information, see How will the second stimulus impact me?

I understand that but I thought I was eligible for the recovery rebate credit for my 2020 tax return it is even included on my tax return documents and it says my total federal return is $2132

What app is showing $332?   If the IRS adjusts the amount of your tax refund that you filed, they will send a letter explaining why they made the adjustment.

The turbo tax app shows the 332$ but if I click to download my actual return that document says $2,132. And I never received anything from the IRS so I just want to figure what happened there.

Without seeing your information in the apps, I don't know what happened.  I will suggest you to stick with the TurboTax online program on the laptop or computer.

To verify your stimulus information in the TurboTax Online program,  here are the steps:

  • After sign in to your account, select Pick up where you left off
  • At the right upper corner, under Search, type in "stimulus" and Enter
  • Select Jump to stimulus
  • Follow prompts to answer the questions and enter the amounts

If you were claimed as a dependent on both 2018 and 2019 tax returns, you do not qualify.  However, if you were not claimed in 2020, you can file your own taxes to claim both the first and second stimulus payments.  The Recovery Rebate Credit is a credit that was authorized by the CARES Act.  If you were eligible for an Economic Impact payment, commonly referred to as a stimulus payment, but did not receive one or you received less than the full amount as an advanced payment in 2020 then you can claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return. YES you can get the Stimulus payment on your 2020 return.  If you were claimed as a dependent in 2019 but not in 2020,  you can still get the Recovery rebate credit on your 2020 return even if your parents got it for you.  And actually if you were over 17 in 2019 they did not get it by claiming you as a dependent.  They only get it for dependents under 17.

At the end Turbo Tax just shows you the net federal and state combined. But that is only for your info. You will still get the full refund and need to pay a tax due.

Check your 1040 line 30 for the Recovery rebate credit.  Before filing,  You can preview the 1040 or print the whole return

On my line 30 it does say I get the 1800 rebate however when my taxes were filed I did not get it included in my refund.

Have you already received your refund?   If it is on Line 30, then it was included in your tax return.

If it's on line 30 it is included in your refund or reduced a tax due.  Follow the math down on all the rest of the lines.

You said your federal refund is 2132?  Is that on line 35a?  The 1800 is included in that.  So your regular refund was only 332.  Oh, that's the 332 you are seeing.  Where in the app does it show 332?

Recovery Rebate Tax Credit

Yes on 35a on my tax documents it says $2,132 and I have already received my refund but it was only $332 and it says my federal return is $332 on the app where it shows both of state and federal return. I don’t think the $1800 was every applied to my return because I didn’t owe any money on my taxes. I feel like there may be a discrepancy in the tax return the irs received and the one it is showing me when I download my return.
