We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

Received an email stating that my tax return is put on hold for 48 hours . However, my returns were accepted and I owed taxes. What should I do?

This is the email I received:
From: xxxxxxxxxxxx@xxxxxx.xxx
TurboTax Customer Support: x-xxx-xxx-xxxx
We've noticed that someone attempted to fill out a tax return using your information with a different account.
We are holding the tax return for 48 hours to give you the opportunity to verify it's yours or stop it. If we don't hear from you within 48 hours, this return will be filed in accordance with IRS filing regulations
Thanks,
The TurboTax Security Team

Furthermore, it does not state if both federal and state tax returns are on hold or just one of them.

Is this legitimate? Or possible scam?

This is an email that is legitimately sent out when someone tries to file a return using the SSN of a previous customer.  It is most often a false alarm, such as when you make a new account for some reason and file a return, your old account will be notified, because Turbotax doesn't know if the new account is also you or someone else.

It can also be a legitimate warning that someone else made an account with your SSN and tried to file a return.  You may be the victim of identity theft.

And lastly, scammers can copy legitimate emails and change them for their own purposes.

I would call customer support and talk to the security team.  Here is the support number posted on a legit Turbotax web page so you know it is the correct safe number to call.

it's more than likely a scam since you say your return was accepted which means that the IRS has gotten it. however, someone may have tried to file using your info but from a different a/c. don't answer the e-mail

You said you were able to figure it out. Did they submitted your return or did you have to wait 48h?
