Received 1099-MISC before coming to NYC

I received prize money in Texas before moving to NYC in January. And I stayed in NYC until the end of this year before moved back to Texas again December.

I received a 1099-MISC form about this prize money.

Do I need to pay NY and NYC tax for this income?

Thanks!

New York filing requirements say that NY taxes ALL income earned (regardless of where it came from) while you were a resident or part-year resident and all New York Source Income earned while a non-resident.

So if you earned the prize money before you became a New York Resident, it would not be taxable on your NYS or NYC tax returns.

Hi Karen,

Thank you very much for your kind reply!

I earned this prize money before I became a New York Resident. Could you advise on how to adjust for this income when I report tax on Turbo Tax Delux 2019 software? I could not find an option on the Turbo tax to remove this amount from New York taxable income. Thank you!

If you moved back out of NY before the end of the year, choose that you are Part-Year NY Resident when you add the State Program.

Just go through the first several screens slowly and when you get to the question below put the date in December you moved out and check the "Earned Money as a Non Resident."

The next screen after the one below will say "NEW YORK INCOME ALLOCATION" and the succeeding screens will have all of your federal income listed with the option to allocate the income to NY or leave it on the federal.

Received 1099-MISC before coming to NYC

Hi Karen,

Thank you very much for your kind reply! I have two additional questions that I would like to ask

1. Does the part-year NY resident apply to me? My situation is a little bit complicated. I left Texas and arrived at NYC for a research assistant position on Jan 13. Then I left NYC and did a summer internship in California from May 24 to Aug 18. After summer, I went back to NYC and left NYC on Dec 30.  I am wondering if I am still a part-year resident status for NYS and NYC?

2. I received student award from my university and they sent me this 1099 misc form.

Could you advice how to report this income in the Turbo tax software? Since this is an award given to me by the university (or a scholarship), do I need to pay federal tax for this income? If I need to pay federal, can I offset some of my education expenses?

Thank you for your kind reply in advance!

1.  You are considered a part-year resident in New York unless you spend less than 30 days there.  Here is a link to that NY information:  New York Residency Status

2.  Unfortunately, you do need to report it as income.  You can report it under Less Common Income as follows:

After sign-in / select Take me to my return /

  1. From the top, select tab Federal Taxes
  2. Income & Expenses
  3. Scroll down to Less Common Income section.
  4. Choose Miscellaneous Income
  5. Select the very first option at the top"Other income not already reported on a Form W-2 or Form 1099".
  6. Then follow the prompts.
