Question

Windows Version Requirements Going Forward

I understand that Turbo Tax (TT) 2025 will not run on Windows 10.    My Question is since Turbo Tax now requires that everyone get Window 11 --- will  TT 2025 still be able to translate data from a 2024 return that was completed on Windows 10 ?

Also, when doing my current year Taxes I typically open up previous year versions of Turbo Tax  --- I am assuming that capability will no longer be supported which is NOT GOOD.   HOPEFULLY, the software developers will work some Magic so that older versions of Turbo Tax can be opened on Windows 11.

I am hoping that a Turbo Tax (Intuit) customer service representative will respond to this question --- so we all get the correct information.

Thank you.

Yes to everything.    You still will be able to transfer the .tax2024 file into 2025 usual.  And you should be able to install and run the prior  year programs too.  I recently upgraded my computer to Windows 11 from 10 and my prior year programs open.    Everything should be the same except you need Windows 11 to run Turbo Tax 2025.   We went though the same situations in the past like going from Windows 8 to Windows 10.

Will you be upgrading your Windows 10 to 11 or getting a new computer?

I have to buy a new computer to run same software I've been using for 30 years.  That's not kind.

@cwr64 re "Can the online TurboTax eFile for free as did last year's desktop software?"

If you are going to try the TT online route, Intuit has an offer if you buy desktop you can switch to online premier for Fed+State for no extra cost.  (this offer is open to everyone not just Win 10 - another example where Intuit is certainly pushing towards online rather than desktop which was likely a big factor in the Win 10 decision).  When you try installing it on Win 10 it would show the window below.  I suppose you can just buy the Deluxe version to get this offer.

Online is not the same workflow/experience as desktop; it has no forms mode and you can only prepare 1 return per account, it's not like desktop where you can do multiple returns or play around with it later in the year.  But I believe online has more capabilities than desktop to upload or import from documents, see blog post below.

I am on W10 desktop PC and I do know I cannot run the desktop TT.  I am looking to learn whether I can use the online TT in place of the desktop TT product I used last year.

I asked whether the online TT can efile for free as the desktop TT did last year.

This is not good. First, Microsoft has imposed hardware requirements that prevent MANY of us from just simply upgrading. Second, Microsoft is offering updates for a fee .. so the premise here is a bit bogus. Third, I'm finding this hard to believe. I'm open for going to on-line, but my mother passed and she doesn't have an account, which means I have to create an account for her just to do her final years' taxes. Finally .. it's AUGUST .. thanks for the advanced warning 😞

Microsoft has extended Windows 10 security support until October 2026. This is being done free of charge.  Why is Intuit taking this ridiculous  position with Turbo Tax?   It’s going to lose 47% of its customer base.

    Level 15
    August 25, 2025

unlikely 47% of all users since online users will still be able you use W10 with a supported browser.  7% of desktop users is a possibility but considering the pricing for online vs desktop, Intuit's revenue could increase. for 2024 $80 desktop federal and one state + fee for state efiling and can efile up to 5 returns. online federal and state $139 for one return + ? for state efiling.  so desktop users can efile 2 returns for $80 + any state efiling fees. online two returns cost $278 + any state efiling fees, so over 3 times the revenue for Intuit for those users that do multiple returns online vs desktop.

yes most people are going to take this as another cue to just upgrade to win 11 and move on.  North America win 10 stands at 41% down from 67% since December, albeit a big push earlier in the year - maybe folks getting ahead of tariff concerns.   Desktop is 1% of Intuit's total revenue ($213mil vs $21bn), 11% of total TT 'units' (4.3mil vs. 34.9mil) while being only 4.5% of TT revenues ($213mil vs. $4.5bn), and declining 5%; while online is growing 10% annually in revenues while also shedding 1% of users.  Per their earnings press release they clearly have no problem "yielding share with lower ARPR (Average Revenue Per Return) customers" to drive revenue growth.

TurboTax Online paying units grew 6 percent on share gains from higher average revenue per return (ARPR) filers. TurboTax Online units declined 1 percent and total TurboTax units declined 2 percent for the year, due to yielding share with lower ARPR customers.

This message is for intuit. I would like to inform you that Microsoft is not ending support for windows 10 as advertised. They are offering an extended security for one year for a fee of $30.00. thus for folks like me it is not practical to get rid of my computers since I cant upgrade to windows 11 due to hardware requirements, thus it is premature to us windows 10 owners not able to use the turbo tax 2025 version due to end of support of windows 10. please do your research with microsoft to verity what I stated above.

Having 2025 turbotax work only with windows 11 because Microsoft is not supporting windows 10 is not correct. Microsoft is implementing 3 plans to continue fir another year till October 2026. I have contacts at Microsoft and they are stating that 51% of computers still use windows 10. Also in case you didn't know Microsoft is extending the continent of Europe continuous support till Oct 2026 free of charge. Since the majority of owners still use windows 10 it would be ill advised to exclude them from using turbo tax. The overwhelming customers will leave including me. Rethink your decision

Been using TurboTax for many years.  No more!   I use Windows 11 at work and like Windows 10 MUCH better.  Not upgrading my personal laptop to Windows 11 and I'm certainly not going to save all my info online!

Oodles of responses here which I scanned through quickly.   I suppose that TT is trying to FORCE people to file taxes NOT using downloaded versions of TT!

The laptop which has Windows 10 Home edition on it that I have used for filing my taxes  via a downloaded version of TT for many years is not compatible with Windows 11.  It would appear that I need to buy a new lap-top. Now, could someone confirm to me the following?

    1. How will TT 2025 be able to import ANY data from my tax filing from 2024 that was done using TT2024 software as TT2025 and TT2024 are installed on TWO different lap-tops?

    2. I believe the answer to the above is - NO, TT2025 won't be able to import ANY DATA.

IF, indeed, the answer is NO, that really sucks as one of the great features has been to be able to have TT software automatically import DATA from previous years!

Data from sale of stock for instance, especially those sales that were made at a LOSS that carry over.

I would value suggestions and answers very much?

@juham2013   Nothing has changed.  You can Transfer 2024 data into 2025,  either to the desktop program or to online.  You just need to copy the tax return data file to the new computer.

You only need the tax return data file ending in .tax2023 to transfer into 2024 or .tax2024 to transfer into next year. You can't transfer the programs. They have to be installed from the CD or Download. You don't need to install older programs unless you need to amend or you didn't save the pdf file. And they only support the last 3 years. If you install an older year you won't be able to update it or download any state programs, so you won't be able to open your return.

For Windows…..What I would do on the old computer, is copy the whole Turbo Tax folder that is under your Documents. That should be where the .tax files and pdf files are stored. Also if you haven't done it, I would open each year in the program and save it as a pdf file, go to FILE - SAVE TO PDF so you don't need the program installed to view your return. Copy that folder to a flash drive or best yet is to burn it to a CD or DVD and then you will have a backup of them. Then on the new computer copy the folder (or files) from the flash drive to your Documents folder.

    Hi "VolvoGirl"!

    Sure value the quick response.

Now, from some of your other responses to other people, I am assuming that you have actually done this already and thus can unequivocally state that I won't have a problem, correct?

Indeed, under "Documents\TurboTax", I do see filing documents (PDFs as I save filings - by fault - as PDF every year) from prior years.   That said, there is no need to worry about the incompatibility between TT SOFTWARE versions (Windows 10/Windows11) and TT2025 would be able to import DATA from those PDF files, correct?

I was a little confused by "to view your return" that you wrote as, I am not necessarily needing to VIEW but rather need to have TT2025 IMPORT all the DATA automatically.

    Cheers!

Making an official disgruntled post about this topic

Intuit has unwisely decided to migrate to the Win11 OS prior to many folks embracing the new platform

I might be among the oldest users of TT

Some versions of Windows were absolute disasters, or short lived, or both.

There's still time for this Giant corporation to relent and build a Win10 version. Clearly, the 2026 build will have to be for Win11 but I've been using the new OS (only on a notebook) and it's far from perfected.

In this thread, there's a noted ability for the DIY version to run 10.

It's a short stretch for Intuit to provide Win 10 support before the sunsetting by MS.

Windows 11 is bloated, bug-riddled spyware. Milllions of Windows users are NOT going to junk perfectly good hardware to use your crap software.

They don't really care all that much. Read the following sentence from baldiebax's post:

Desktop is only 1% of their revenues so they don't care about the loss of low revenue users on desktop as long as their online/live revenue continues to grow, etc etc.

All the older versions will open on Windows 11.
Intuit really does not want you to go to Windows 11 because you will still own your data. They want you to go to their remote server (aka the cloud) so that they own your data.
Since I have decades of turbo tax I have purchased a Windows 11 laptop for situations like this.

What data would that be? Are they interested in your social security number or something?

They're going to sell your name and address to another company? They most likely already have it after you buy the software.

    You misunderstand my meaning.
When I purchase the program (either by download or CD) it is mine and on my machine. When I do my taxes all the data is on my machine in my possession.
If you do your work in a remote location it is no longer yours. You no longer control the data or even the access to your data.
If the data is compromised you have no control over what happens to it. Data breaches happen all the time. Keep your private sensitive data, private.
