tax software is expensive and the cost is not graduated based on the amount of your refund, if any.

Are you aware that you are posting from an expensive version of the software that provides live help from a CPA?  Did you want, need or use that?  The version you are posting from is Basic Live which is $50- -- and if you prepared a state return it is more.  Choosing to pay your fees from your federal refund adds even more---an extra $39.99.

Would you qualify to use a different version that would be free to prepare both federal and state?  If so, you have to start over in a different program and use a different account and user ID.  But instead of paying it would be FREE.

Try Free File:

You qualify if your income was $36,000 or less, or $69,000 or less if active duty military, or if you qualify for Earned Income Credit

If you switch to Free File you must create a new account and new user ID.
