I had $1200 refund coming. However I had to amend taxes (within 24 hrs), then OWED $1600. Will initial refund come, then I owe rest:like +1200-1600 actually equals $400?

- I amended my tax return because my filing status was incorrect. My mom can claim me, but I accidentally somehow had myself as "no one can claim me as a dependent".
- To clarify, I'm wondering if I will get the initial $1200 refund anyway (with my mistake on the filing status), then when the amended taxes say I owe in $1600, am I going to get the $1200 first and then have to send that back with $400 more to pay off what I owe in total taxes. Since I filed the amendment within 24 hours, I just am not sure.

When you amend your tax return, the original tax return is still processed as it was submitted.

If your amended return is showing a refund amount, this will be in addition to the amount on the original return.

Once you have printed and mailed your amended return, keep in mind that amended tax returns can take a while to be processed by the IRS, especially during tax season. The IRS will not accept an amendment electronically.
