When I took the distribution I had tax withheld. Any idea how I can tell if all of that tax was just applied to last year's return? I believe I'm taking the entire hit for the second year's "1/3" but not getting credit for 1/3 of the taxes I paid when I received the money.
It says name of disaster, I wonder if you are just supposed to type in coronavirus?
Thank you all. I guess the form will be available on 3/31/2022.
@aztecjedi That's what I did, but upon review the software is actually wrong/broken and it should not be prompting you for this. I put coronavirus which populates the FEMA line in section "C" but then it explicitly says "Use item D, not item C, for the coronavirus."
Then under section "D" the box is checked as it should be based on my answers and it also explicitly states "Don’t list the coronavirus in item C."
Thank you for sharing, hopefully someone monitoring will have an answer for us.
@alozacha92 Assuming you only took Coronavirus disaster relief in 2020 and not another FEMA issue in 2020, it appears the TurboTax software is broken/wrong and shouldn't be asking for you for this at all.
I keyed in "coronavirus" in here when prompted, which populates to section "C" which explicitly states once you review the form "Use item D, not item C, for the coronavirus." Then when you go to section "D" the box is checked as it should be and again explicitly states "Don’t list the coronavirus in item C."
This is a long way of saying that the TurboTax software is wrong and shouldn't be prompting us for this, and I hope the IRS accepts this given the "D" box is appropriately checked, though there should be nothing on that "C" line. The IRS did already accept my return already after filing this way, but I hope I don't have any issues downstream due to this broken software.
you used all your withholding in 2020. It was not divided into thirds.
mdwill01,
THANK YOU!! This worked. It adjusted my refund and now seeing the correct amount on line 4b of the 1040.. Agreed, this is worded horribly! Why ask for line 17 twice and instruct people to leave the one that matters blank? Frustrating but now I can finally file my taxes. Thanks again!
@mdwill01 Yes this is worded terribly. My 2020 box 17 was unchecked, but I interpreted it the other way, in that you just put in the Line 17 number which I did. I then populated the Line 18 number as instructed, and then put in the Line 17 number a second time as instructed.
I also thought it was very odd that it asked you for the exact same number twice, but I was able to file and when I reviewed the form it looked like all of this data came through correctly.
What am I missing guys? I entered in all the information about my CARES act 401k distribution EXACTLY as instructed. TRIPLE CHECKED it. I only paid taxes on 1/3 of the distribution in 2020. I should owe another 1/3 of it this year. BUT when I enter in all my information my refund amount does not change which it should. It should go down because I have unpaid taxes on $7k worth of income.
I went several pages back on this forum and see other folks having trouble including a few others like me with the same issue.
Is there another form(8915-F??) that is going to be released/yet to be incorporated into the software to fix this? If so they need to get on it, because the software is telling me I'm ready to file and there are no errors, which is WRONG. Thank God I pay attention and have been doing this for years. Some folks who don't know better and file are going to get smoked by the IRS because of turbo tax.
If that form is already released then the software is simply bugged and should be fixed ASAP. Anyone have the same experience?
EDIT: I THINK @mdwill01 note on the last page is the answer. Although I was dealing with a 401k withdrawal and not an IRA so I had to interpret it to my return however when I entered the amount from box 9 instead of leaving it blank it seems to have fixed my issue and adjusted my refund by the large amount I was expecting.
The instructions needs to say enter 0 if box is checked OR enter the amount from line 9. As it reads now, it seems like if the box is checked you enter 0, but there is no other instruction beyond that so we are all leaving it blank.
check your entry for the line that says "if you checked the box enter 0 "
the default action was to not check the box.
BUT
some are already saying that TurboTax does not attach 8915-F to your e-Filed return if you e-File it today.
Well I'm going to sit on my return for another week just to make sure what I did was correct and also to give Turbotax time to get their crap together and have the form attached.
My justification for using and paying Turbo tax prices has always been how smooth and easy they make some complex tax scenarios but they really are making me reconsider my options after using them for over half a decade.
@paslaughI did this same thing and saw what you describe. I thought about it afterwards, but maybe we could have just hit the space bar there so the field registers something but is actually left blank on the form. I was going to try that but there's no way to directly edit (from browser) the 8915F. You can delete it but I was afraid doing so then I wouldn't get it back. So I left it as you did and filed. I got an email 12 minutes later saying my federal return was accepted. I guess we'll see.
@fanfare How can you tell whether or not the 8915-F did not attach to the eFiled returns today?
I answered all of the questions and the 8915-F was attached to my final PDF, but I have no clue if there's any way to check whether or not the electronic submission to the IRS appropriately included this form.
according to one poster elsewhere, Customer Support told them that.
I can't know one way or the other.
Possibly a miscommunication.
