If you have 2 different businesses, you should have 2 different Schedule Cs on your return and 0 Schedule Fs (which is for Farms).   Make sure you didn't accidentally refer to either of your businesses as a farm or selected a farm business code when you set up the profiles for each business.   You can type in Schedule C in the search box and use the link to see your business summary page.

Click Edit or Review next to each business and then click on Edit next to General Info or Profile.  Check the descriptions and Business Codes for each business.  The business code is listed under Tax Details at the bottom of the profile page.

If you don't see both businesses in the summary, you may have set one up as a farm.  You can click on Federal in the left pane (assuming you are using Online) and see all of your income.  Find the farm and remove it then set the business up under Self-Employment income.

Thank you for such a quick response...I am so confused because i enter the proper business code (which has nothing to do with Farming).

This is a bug in the software. I have the same issue happening to me even after updating to the latest update. I have a Schedule C and my business code has nothing to do with a farm and my forms don't show a Schedule F, only the C.  I guess for now, we have no choice but to continue and just ignore the fact that it says "farm". BTW, my business code is 541600, which if you look it up - has nothing to do with a farm.

Where do you report program bugs to Turbotax?

This is happening to me too.  Definitely didn't pick farm.  This must be a result of more people getting a 1099-NEC for self-employed consulting work.

Did you enter the 1099-NEC outside your self-employment activity or inside your self-employment activity?  If you entered the 1099-NEC outside the self-employment activity, that may be the source of the selection of 'farm' for this income.

For instance, entering the 1099-NEC outside your self-employment activity would be entered as follows:

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Federal.
  • Along the top of the screen, click on Wages & Income.
  • Under Your Income, click Show more to the right of Other common income.
  • Under Other common income, click Start/Revisit to the right of Form 1099-NEC.

Entering the 1099-NEC inside your self-employment activity would be entered as follows:

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Federal.
  • Along the top of the screen, click on Wages & Income.
  • Under Your Income, click Show more to the right of Self-employment.

At the screen Let's enter the income for your self-employment activity, choose Form 1099-NEC.  Click Continue.

Thanks.  While your navigation isn't descriptive of my screen (I have the downloaded version), I am looking at the business income and expenses tab, "Business Income and Expenses: Schedule C, Form 1099-Misc" section where my consulting income from the 1099-NEC has been recorded correctly.  So, no problem on my end.  Note that Turbotax still describes this section "Form 1099-MISC" when it can now include 1099-NEC.  Farm Income listed below that section has $0 dollars recorded.  The point I was making was that when filling out the business income section, Turbotax refers to any 1099-NEC income as farm income in passing even if it is being treating correctly  on the forms, it is sending up a red flag to people for no reason.

Are you able to pass Review?

In TurboTax Home & Business, I am able to enter a 1099-NEC as income under Business Income and Expenses Schedule C, Form 1099-MISC.

I am able to answer qualified business income questions.  I am able to pass Review.

There are no references to 'farm'.  Do you find those references in the Review process?

So there does not seem to be a remedy for this error in the system. Is that right.

You should not be referred to the Schedule F.  It will be only the 1099-NEC and Schedule C.

You will need to enter the information in both Form 1099-NEC and Schedule C sections.  You would start from the 1099-NEC section under "1099-MISC and Other Common Income".  You would then follow prompts to tell the program you are filing a Schedule C.  As it creates a Schedule C for you, you will need to go to the Schedule C portion separately to confirm your income amount, add related expenses and complete required information.

In TurboTax online, here are the steps:

  • Sign into your account, select Pick up where you left off
  • From the upper right menu, select Search and type in 1099nec and Enter
  • Select the Jump to 1099nec
  • Follow prompts to complete the section

Then

  • From the upper right menu, select Search and type in schedule c and Enter
  • Select the Jump to schedule c
  • Next screen, "Your 2020 work summary" under your self employed business, select Review
  • Continue to enter related expenses and other required information
